Superfoods you need: Camu Camu

This week we're taking a look at one of the superfoods we use in our delicious waters:

CAMU CAMU

What is it?  Well, it's a berry from the riverbanks of South American countries, namely Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, and Colombia.  About the size of a lemon, its got a reddish, orange-ish coloration and it's PACKED with Vitamin C.  Interestingly, it's fruit and leaves are also used medicinally in its native countries.

Many claim that the fruit has anti-viral properties, treating everything from herpes and shingles to the common cold.  While these claims have yet to be backed up by science, there enough of them floating around to give some consideration.  Speaking of research, here are a few tidbits that HAVE been proven by science.

Vitamin C

100 grams of camu camu powder contains around 2145mg of Vitamin C.  That's equivalent to nearly 60 times that of an orange!

Gallic Acid

This acid appears to have anti-fungal and anti-viral properties, and is found in high doses in Camu Camu.

Ellagic Acid

Another acid found in Camu Camu, this is quite the anti-oxidant.  There are indications that it -might- have an anti-diabetes effect, but research here is minimal.

Potassium

100 grams of camu camu contains around 71 mg of Potassium; a nutrient vital for proper functioning of the heart and kidneys.

Leucine

Another essential amino acid, Leucine is needed for the production of growth hormones as well as the growth and recovery of muscle and bone tissue.

Valine

This is an essential amino acid which is important to the nervous system (and cognitive function in general).  It is also used by the body to prevent muscle breakdown.

Serine

Yet another amino acid, this little gem helps our bodies by breaking down proteins and polypeptides into useable forms.

Flavonoids

Camu camu has several different flavonoids (compounds found in plants which give fruits and vegetables their colors). For the most part, they function as antioxidants in the body, neutralizing free radicals.

Inflammation

Along with vitamin C, other nutrients and amino acids found in camu camu such as anthocyanins, catechins, and flavonols, are potent anti-inflammatory agents.

Summed up, Camu Camu is something you really need to be including in your superfood regimen.  Fortunately, we've got the stuff in our delicious Pink Water!  Along with Camu Camu, our Pink Water gets a health boost from beet powder and a flavor boost from a tiny dash of rose water.  Find it here, and enjoy it anytime you need a healthy, refreshing pick-me-up.  Also be on the lookout for an upcoming blog post where I'll detail a few ways to turn this healthful hydration into a (questionably) healthful libation!
